The concept of sunsetting (weapons having a power limit and being less useful for certain activities) emerged from power creep concerns and a pressure to make powerful new weapons. Bungie was continuously criticized for making weapons that don’t impact the meta and the studio’s solution is to limit the power of a weapon so players are constantly searching for new legendary weapons to bolster their loadout.

Recently, a Reddit user expressed his unwillingness to buy legendary ornaments from this season’s Eververse stock since the connected weapons will eventually be unusable in content where a high power level is required. Outside of exotic ornaments (because they are not affected by sunsetting, any legendary weapon ornament’s value has decreased with the reveal of sunsetting.
The studio had expected this and had announced that Destiny 2 will no longer sell new legendary weapon ornaments in the future. The wording suggests that legendary weapon ornaments already on sale may re-appear in the store, but Bungie will no longer produce new Eververse ornaments for legendary guns.
This does not mean the end of new legendary ornaments, as the studio plans to itemize more cosmetics into activities. One way the game will offer customization for legendary guns is through the core playlists, where players will be able to earn skins for seasonal pursuit weapons. It is also worth remembering that sunsetting will still allow players to use their favorite guns in legacy Destiny 2 content.
It might be a small percentage but players who mostly run old content or the more casual player base may continue to find value in legendary Eververse weapon ornaments until this fall and beyond in Destiny 2. Even if a hardcore player buys a legendary Eververse ornament, they’ll still have a year to enjoy it since a legendary weapon only reaches its max power limit after a year.
Even though some Eververse loot may be depreciating, many fans are happy with the fact that an item category will be excluded from the store. It will become evident in year 4 whether Bungie dramatically reduces the number of ornaments, keeps creating the same number of ornaments but spreads them throughout activities, or fills the gap left in Eververse with exotic ornaments.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
