With more than 20,000 upvotes, the video titled “This guy risks his own safety to save a dog along side highway from certain disaster” is currently one of the most popular on Reddit, appearing on the front page. It’s also dominating the subreddit where it was posted, r/NextFuckingLevel, a forum for “impressive” actions, skills or moments.

“Posts should be able to elict a reaction of ’that is next level’ from viewers,” the subreddit’s criteria describes.

In the video, the man waits patiently with the dog at the highway’s median, occasionally patting the animal on the head. Eventually he lifts the dog into his arms by the scruff of its neck and waits for an opportunity to run back across the three lances of traffic, which he succesfully does, narrowly avoiding a pickup truck.

“This guy risks his own safety to save a dog along side highway from certain disaster” was posted to Reddit by user memezzer, a high-volume account that uploads videos, history memes, screenshots of thought-provoking or funny tweets and photos of rare animals. Recycling content from around the internet, memezzer has posted content to Reddit 18 times in the past 24 hours.

While many commenters assumed the video was taken in India, the direction of traffic makes that impossible. As with many other former colonies of the British Empire, traffic in India drives on the left side of the road, unlike the right-side drivers zipping by the viral video.

The exact provenance of the video remains unknown, but it’s possible the video of a man risking his own safety to save a dog trapped by traffic was taken in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The earliest source for the video a search was able to uncover appears in May, 2018, on a YouTube channel called the “Democratic Iran Channel.” There, the video carries a slightly different title: “Man Risks His Life & Saves Scared Dog Stuck on Dangerous Highway In Iran.”

The Democratic Iran Channel advocates against the government of Iran established by the 1979 Constitution, which includes democratically elected legislators and a president, but subordinates most state power to an unelected Supreme Leader. The YouTube channel instead bolsters Reza Pahlavi, the son of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah, or Emperor, of Iran. Pahlavi—whose father was empowered by a 1953 coup d’état orchestrated by the United States and the U.K., then overthrown by the Islamic Republic in 1979—now lives in Maryland, but claims to represent a legitimate Iranian government in exile.

In the context of the Democratic Iran Channel, which posts propaganda against the Islamic Republic, including protest footage from the country’s youth movements, the video of the man risking his life to save a scared dog demonstrates the resiliency and values of everyday Iranians.

“Despite all of the problems that Iranians face today, such as poverty, water shortage, corrupt regime, high inflation, and etc. many people still find time to help animals in Iran,” their description for the video reads. “Well done to this brave man.”

Newsweek has reached out to the Democratic Iran Channel for additional details regarding the video, but did not hear back in time for publication.

But even stripped of context and reposted to Reddit, the video demonstrates how far people will go for a good dog.
